A One of its Kind Workshop
In a world full with challenges and distractions, staying true to one’s Islam is crucial, yet more difficult to today’s world than ever before. The Path of a Believer is a workshop designed to equip Muslims with the knowledge and wisdom needed to navigate the complexities of Halāl and Harām in the Western world, focusing on the areas of consumption and social interactions.
This workshop will delve into the Islamic jurisprudence of Halāl (permissible) and Harām (forbidden) as it pertains to modern-day scenarios and how they relate to traditional Islamic teachings. From dietary laws to social etiquette, participants will gain insights into maintaining their religious obligations in environments that might not always accommodate them.
Objectives:
- To clarify the concepts of Halāl and Harām in everyday situations.
- To provide practical guidelines on maintaining Islamic dietary laws and social etiquette in the Western context.
- To strengthen the Muslim identity through informed choices and interactions.
Topics Covered
Module 1: Defining Halāl and Harām Consumption
- Explore the Islamic principles governing permissible and forbidden food and drink.
- Understand exceptions due to necessity or force.
- Learn about the Islamic perspective on seafood, predatory animals, and the use of alcohol (Khamr).
Module 2: Contemporary Matters Regarding Food & Drink
- Discuss the acceptability of Dhabīhah from Ahl ul-Kitāb.
- Compare machine-slaughtered and hand-slaughtered meat.
- Examine the rulings on non-intoxicating forms of Khamr and its medicinal uses.
Module 3: Social Interactions (Part 1)
- Study the Quranic commandment of lowering the gaze and its relevance today.
- Review social etiquettes prescribed in Islam when interacting with Muslims and non-Muslims.
Module 4: Social Interactions (Part 2)
- Discuss the Islamic rulings on gender intermingling and segregation.
- Understand the etiquette of dealing with professionals and official bodies like the MSA (Muslim Student Association).
